RESOLVING FREQUENT INSTALLATION CHALLENGES WITH BABY GATES
CRUCIAL INSTALLATION WARNING
Installing baby gates requires a certain level of skill; attempting this task without the assistance of a professional may lead to safety risks and unexpected expenses.
By reading this article, you acknowledge that you have reviewed and accepted the terms and conditions as outlined here: Website Terms & Conditions.
The scenarios outlined below present common challenges I have encountered during installations, which may reflect your own experiences and offer valuable solutions.
INSTALLATION ISSUE 1: UNEVEN SURFACES
ADDRESSING UNEVEN SURFACE CHALLENGES

-
- Measure the widest point at the top to determine the required size for the gate and any extensions needed. (CLICK HERE FOR MEASURING GUIDELINES).
- Once you have the gates/extensions, use an angle grinder fitted with a metal/aluminium disc to cut the gate accurately, following the measurements indicated in the reference images above.
- Detach the plastic component from the section you intend to remove and insert it into the cut part of the gate to ensure proper fitting of the tension knob.
- This process will be clearer once you have the gate on hand.
INSTALLATION ISSUE 2: ATTACHING TO A SKEW WALL
FINDING SOLUTIONS FOR MOUNTING ON A SKEW WALL

-
- Ensure that the gate and extensions are ready for installation.
- Use Pratley Putty Quickset to fill any gaps and create a level surface on the wall.
- Allow the Putty to cure completely BEFORE tightening the tension knobs to securely attach the gate using pressure.
- Do not rely on the gate for safety until all procedures are finalised and the gate has been tested for stability.
INSTALLATION ISSUE 3: INSTALLING BABY GATES OUTDOORS
OVERCOMING THE CHALLENGE OF OUTDOOR INSTALLATION
While outdoor installations of baby gates can be a quick and economical solution, they may also void the warranty on these gates.

I recommend treating outdoor installation of baby gates as a temporary and budget-friendly option. This may risk voiding your warranty on the gates.
-
- Baby gates are specifically created for indoor use and are not designed to withstand outdoor elements due to potential exposure to harsh weather.
- This limitation is explicitly stated in the warranty documentation that accompanies the product.
- Failing to adhere to warranty conditions will lead to the loss of warranty coverage.
For a durable solution, consider hiring a contractor who specialises in security or latch gates. Although this may incur higher costs, it is the most effective strategy.
PREPARING THE BABY GATE AND EXTENSIONS FOR OUTDOOR USE:
Disclaimer: None of these precautions guarantee complete rust protection; however, they are intended to prolong the lifespan of the gate in South African weather conditions.
Regular treatment every 1-2 months can notably decrease the risk of rust.
To reduce rust and moisture build-up, follow these guidelines:
-
- Before installation, treat the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit, ensuring to cover all surface areas, including the base.
- Drill holes at the bottom of the gate using an 8mm steel drill bit. This will allow water to drain and prevent rust from forming inside the hollow gate, where moisture may accumulate at joints, connectors, and tension knobs. The holes will provide ventilation to avert moisture build-up.
- Apply a light coating of Rustoleum Painters Touch 2X Ultra Cover – Satin Clear 340g, available at takealot.com, to the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit.
- Allow to dry completely (approximately 2 hours), then apply a second coat.
For pre-existing rust:
-
- Spray the affected areas with Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer 291g, following the product guidelines.
- Refer to the product description on takealot.com; you may need to obtain mineral spirits to clean any overspray on non-rusted areas.
- The rust reformer will convert rust to a black colour, which should then be covered with Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Enamel Gloss White 340g, available on takealot.com.
